Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) in deep gray matter as a neurodegeneration marker in relapsing-remitting and secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis

Purpose. The aim of the study was to investigate changes in iron distribution brain patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique – quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) comparison clinical data. Materials and methods. Three groups were included this prospective study: 47 relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), 20 secondary progressive (SPMS) 39 healthy controls. For all we collected data, including history present illness (H&P) disability degree, performed MRI followed by QSM maps obtaining assessing relative subcortical structures. Results. We found an increase heads caudate nuclei putamen SPMS as compared RRMS. At same time, a decrease thalamic pulvinar detected long term, but sharp hyperintensity conjunction decreasing volume observed some patients. Conclusion. Increased on structures brain, reflecting content, is more typical for SPMS, which may indicate prognostic value these changes.
